MAADI Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the MAADI?
The Math Adult Autism Diagnostic Interview (MAADI) is a semi-structured diagnostic interview designed to support mental health clinicians in assessing autism in adults. It emphasizes internal experiences, masking and compensation, sensory profiles, emotional regulation, and the nuanced presentations common in high-masking adults.
Who can use the MAADI?
The MAADI will be available free of charge to licensed mental health clinicians, psychologists, neuropsychologists, graduate-level clinicians under supervision, and providers who conduct adult autism evaluations. It will not available for self-assessment and must be administered by qualified professionals.
Why is the MAADI free?
The MAADI was designed to remove barriers to high-quality autism assessment for adults. Offering the tool at no cost increases access to accurate, affirming evaluations, supports neurodiversity-affirming practice, and helps clinicians serve adults who have historically been overlooked or misdiagnosed.
How was the MAADI developed?
The MAADI was conceptualized, created, and authored by Kristen Math, MA, MS (EdD Candidate), an autistic clinician and assessment specialist.
Will the MAADI continue to evolve?
Yes. The MAADI is intended to be a living, clinician-shaped assessment tool. It is currently undergoing content validity review, expert feedback, pilot testing, and planned psychometric validation. Future updates will continue to be guided by mental health professionals..
Is the MAADI validated?
The MAADI is in active validation. This includes expert review, item refinement, pilot testing, and planned statistical validation. Progress updates will be shared as research continues.
Can I use the MAADI in clinical reports?
Yes. Clinicians will be able to reference MAADI findings in diagnostic reports, treatment plans, autism assessments, and clinical summaries. The MAADI is designed to integrate smoothly with other standardized measures.
Is training available?
A complete MAADI training program including video modules, case examples, behavioral observation training, and scoring instruction is under development. Updates will be available on the website.
How do I request access to the MAADI?
Clinicians will be able to request access by submitting licensure information, credentials, practice details, and an ethical use agreement. Upon approval, clinicians receive the MAADI Interview, Scoring Guide, Behavioral Observation Checklist, and future updates. Currently, only clinicians interested in helping with content validity review will be able to receive the MAADI.
Can clients complete the MAADI themselves?
No. The MAADI must be administered by a trained clinician. It is not a self-assessment tool.
